Welcome

Hello and welcome to my website.

My name is Emma. I provide one-to-one Counselling and Psychotherapy to children, young people and adults of all ages.

My therapy room is based in Morley, Leeds (LS27)

Counselling can help with many difficult life problems – from coping with traumatic experiences and events, to dealing with depression and anxiety, or managing harmful emotions and behaviours.

I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and have many years’ experience in short-term work, as well as with longer-term, more complex issues.

I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space, in which you can talk about yourself, your problems and hopes, and where you can decide what, if any, changes you may wish to make in your life. I will endeavour to help you in this process in a way that is supportive and empowering.

About Me

My background

I have been fully trained and working as Counsellor since 2010 and have worked with children, young people and adults from many diverse backgrounds and cultures.

I have developed my private practice since 2017, and find that clients refer to me from a number of sources, many from word-of-mouth recommendations.

I also work for a schools counselling service in Leeds, providing short-term therapy to children and young people. I have held this post for several years and feel it has significantly enhanced my knowledge and experience of working with children and young people and the difficulties they struggle with.

I have previous experience of counselling in various other settings, including ChildLine, College, University, GP surgeries, other counselling/support agencies.

My counselling approach

There are many ways of working or ‘approaches’ in counselling and psychotherapy.

Although my main training and approach is based in “Person-Centred” theory, I have continued to develop my range of skills, knowledge and experience, so I work slightly differently with each new client I meet, according to their individual needs.

My main aim is to provide a therapeutic relationship, which you may use for your own personal growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There has been much debate, over many years about the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy. Broadly speaking, many therapists consider that Psychotherapy refers to longer-term, more ‘in-depth’ work, although such therapy may be carried out by suitably experienced Counsellors and Psychotherapists alike.

The British Association for Counsellors & Psychotherapist’s definition is ‘Counselling and Psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or longer term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.’

How does Counselling work?

People often choose to have counselling because they are experiencing difficulties and distress in their lives.

Counselling offers a safe, confidential place to talk to a trained professional about your feelings and concerns. You might talk about difficult events in your life, or about your relationships and emotions. You might have negative thoughts and behaviours that you want to change. You can talk about anything that is troubling you.

I will not give you advice or solve your problems for you, as I believe that you have your own answers within yourself to discover. I see my role as helping you to understand yourself better, so that you may find your own answers in order to promote change and growth in your life.

What will I have to do in the sessions?

Be open to the experience of counselling and be honest with yourself. This will help to build trust between us and help you to work through your issues in a safe and secure environment. What you talk about will vary depending on the problem you want help with. It could include:
• your relationships
• your childhood
• your emotions
• your thoughts
• your behaviour
• your identity
• situations or events you find difficult

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed answer to this question. Depending on the issues we are working on and what emerges for you, it can vary a great deal from client to client. Many issues can be resolved in short-term work, whilst others may require longer-term therapy. Counselling is a process which takes time and commitment. We can work together for as long as you feel necessary.

Sessions & Fees

What to expect

Our first meeting would be an initial introductory/assessment session, which gives us the opportunity to meet and discuss how I work, what your needs are and decide together whether I am the right therapist for you.

I can offer a telephone call before we meet if you would prefer. This is free of charge and can last up to 20 minutes.

Appointments are offered at various times on Monday and Thursday afternoons and evenings

Children/young people

I work with children/young people from the age of 8.

A telephone call between a parent/carer and myself before the initial session is advised, to help gather information and to give you the opportunity to ask any questions that might help your child feel more comfortable about attending. For children aged 13 and under, the parent/carer(s) would be invited to the first part of the initial session.

Fees:

• Initial Assessment

– 50 to 55 minutes
– £35 Payable in advance to secure the booking

• Individual Session

– 50-55 minutes
– £50

NB: For outdoor sessions, an additional charge may be applied (for travel costs/time), depending on the agreed location.

Please note that appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are charged in full.

I have a limited number of concessionary spaces available for clients who are on a low income and would struggle to meet the full cost (please ask).
